Can elements of hopscotch be used as aesthetic tools to create cultural impact? This question shaped Julia Mandle’s project Hopscotch, which premiered at The Drawing Center’s The Big Draw event.

Using her signature chalk shoes, Mandle engaged the public in a large-scale, outdoor game and collaborative drawing. Referencing the French iteration of hopscotch, Escargot, performers created overlapping spirals to play the game upon. Employing the vocabulary of Hopscotch, the drawing engendered a meditation on the concepts of “safety” and “home.”
